Game AI has been making progress by leaps and bounds of late, games like half life have flexible AI that allows them to respond in ways that seem almost human, with plans that remain fluid depending on the stimuli. |

Half-Life Blew me away.
I just completed it and felt
fully satified which is a thing
when finishing a game.

Unequivocally the best multiplayer game in existence....Beats Quake, half-life, doom, duke nukem, and whichever other first person shootem up game you can think of.....For those that like a story you better then start saving money cause Unreal 2 is coming out an it looks SWEET!!!!!! |

I agree with ots and the other guy. Diablo + Diablo 2 were mind boggling. |

Technically, the AI in Diablo 2 is very simple. Other than the pathfinders, there's really nothing to them. The game is great, I agree, but the AI is severely lacking. They dont even try to sustain themselves, its fight to the death, no questions asked.
Half-life, though old(not that D2 isnt) does have alright AI. But some of the mod-bots are really impressive. For instance, Day of Defeat, a HL mod, has Sturmbod, programmed completely by users(originally, so was DoD, but it's Valve-soft now). Sturmbot mimmics the online behaviors of humans, and even allows for teamwork and the ability to take commands from humans. It's truly some great game AI.
Anyone played Black & White? The AI in that isn't amazing in a sense of complexity, but on the scale of it, I think it's worth a mention. Not only is there AI for the hundreds of villagers, but the complexity of the creature's minds is surprising. They've taken the giga-pet to the impressive level. Personality and trainability are big variables, and big AI.
The RTS games(Warcraft, Command&Conquer, etc.) are also pretty simple when it comes to behaviors. Most of the computer AI is predictable, and the only change in difficulty in it is done through speed, not intelligence. It looks good, but there's nothing really complex going on.
Other than Sturmbot and B&W, I have not seen much dynamic AI in games. Something which is definately a must-have to call the game great. These systems resemble Complex Ataptive Systems, and allow agents to interact with other agents and humans, resulting in smarter AI as time goes on in an almost evolutionary method. |
